Kinship Course

You'll learn about:

Course Description

This Kinship course unpacks the unique kinship structure of the Yolngu people of north-east Arnhem Land. It will give you a real glimpse into the original kinship system that once operated across Australia.

First Nations Australians and other Minority groups have a very different family naming system to mainstream Australia.

Understanding how Yolngu see family enables us to work alongside them to achieve healthy outcomes. A lack of knowledge in this area can lead to miscommunication, poor relationships and failed policies aimed at improving family outcomes.

This Kinship course will introduce you to a whole new way of seeing family.

The  course includes:

Chapter 1 introduces the Yolngu kinship system and its terms and naming protocols.

Chapter 2 details Kinship Connections and different relationships.

Chapter 3 explores Kinship Avoidances and the reasons behind them.

This course also includes downloadable kinship charts in both A3 and A4 formats.

The Kinship course is produced by Richard Trudgen will take between 2–2.5 hours to complete.

Great introduction to the kinship system

Very helpful explanations and respectful approach. I found this extremely useful as a junior doctor coming up to work in Darwin with Yolngu patients.
